When hooking up any regular LCD(liquid crystal display) the number of pins required from your microcontroller to control the LCD is quite much. So what this module does is to use the i2c technique to reduce the number of pins to only two, SDA(Serial data) and SCL(Serial clock). This will allow you to be able to use the rest of the pins on your microcontroller for other peripherals too.
